August 4, 1997On Saturday, August 2, I had the pleasure of meeting one of the National Park Service Rangers who covers the Presidio Beat. She informed me that I needed to get in touch with the Presidio Special Services Department ( she also said that she really like the flyer we put on all of the posts, and that people on the up and up thought we were "alright"). I called the NPS today, Monday August 4, and I am sorry to say that we must cease and decist all activities in the Presidio; hopefully this will be a temporary measure, until we can get official permissions in place from the National Park Service. As a showing of good faith I am going to dedicate tomorrow night's shoot a round to removing all of our posts from the Presidio. The San Francisco Disc Golf Club will take no further permanent steps in the Presidio until we have all of the necessary permits in place. I have begun the process of application for use, and I remain confident that we shall have a disc golf course in the Presidio, but now we must overcome the piles of red tape. Greg Shine, the NPS person I spoke with on the phone used to play disc golf in college. Armando Quintero --Greg Shine's Boss-- has been reading the web site for the last few weeks, and is in the process of drafting a response to our "Entreaty." The bad news is the particular bit of land we (I) chose is not set aside for "organized sport," the good news is there is a lot of land in the Presidio; and Mr.Shine sounded optimistic about the possibility of a re-location. We knew this time would come, but had hoped to be more prepared, and greater in numbers when it did. Now, more than ever, we need your support. We need to continue to prove to the NPS that disc golf is a sport which can coexist with other recreations, and will benefit the Presidio, and all of the people who use it. If you would like to send me an e-mail voicing your love of the sport, support for our cause, or just general goodwill it would be greatly appreciated. I, as always, will keep you posted --hopefully pole-holed before too long-- and still love to get those "Let's go play a round" e-mails and phone calls. We will have a course in San Francisco yet! You and I will shoot it together, too. I can't wait.
Play Disc Golf!August 4, Part III had a long conversation with Armando and Greg of the Special Uses and Events Division of the NPS today. They are very nice fellows, and they are going to help us put together a proposal. Greg used to play disc golf in college, so he knows first hand what we are all about. They are going to send us a Request For Proposal, and we are going to request a proposal =). |
