Operation Dream, April 2, 1999On Saturday, April 2, the San Francisco Disc Golf Club and a host of volunteers from San Francisco Ultimate Community participated in the Fifth Annual Operation Dream Easter Egg Hunt.
This marked the second year in a row that the SFDGC has participated in
Operation Dream, and we're looking forward to coming back for years to come.
1999's Operation Dream included over 500 children from within San Francisco,
many of whom remembered us from '98. The majority of the kids had never
played a version of frisbee golf before, and the rapid pace at which they
were picked it up was fun to watch.
We love participating in this event for many reasons, but the number one reason has to be the gusto the kids bring to playing frisbee games. People of all walks and ages are facinated by the flight of a disc, and the challenge of throwing a frisbee accurately, and it is a joy for us to see children take to the sport so wholeheartedly. Trying to show off, Greg threw a Maximum Time Aloft shot that just sailed in the wind. A group of 10 kids who Greg had been showing frisbee golf to were instantaneously drawn to the concept of throwing a frisbee in the air in such a way that you can catch your own shot, and spent the rest of the afternoon hurling discs into the wind, and then running them down. One boy managed to make three catches over the course of the afternoon! Such a showing would have earned him a place at last year's California State Overall Flying Discs Championships ;-).
Monthly Disc Golf PicnicOn Sunday, April 4th the San Francisco Disc Golf Club hosted its monthly disc golf picnic in Golden Gate Park. It was a beautiful day in the park, birds were chirping, a slight breeze was blowing, and hordes of people were finding their way in to celebrate Easter. We managed to play golf for 3 hours, but eventually it became obvious that we were going to have to move all of the baskets, be real jerks inforcing our permit, or call it a day; so Edo and Q headed out to 'Cidio West 2.0 and co-set a new course record. In short, we learned not to hold monthly picnics on national holidays, unless you are expecting a turnout of over 30 golfers. |
